They have long, coarse, black hair. Their face, ears, hands and feet are naked and flesh-coloured. Older
chimpanzees have black faces. They have no tail, and their arms are longer than legs. They sometimes
walk on their two legs like humans do. Their heights differ depending on the sex, for example male

and on the ground. During this period, they are building nests, playing and looking for food though, late
afternoon is usually the most intensive feeding period. Chimpanzees use their hands and feet to move
and swing skillfully from branch to branch. Though they are able to walk upright, chimpanzees more
often use their all fours, leaning forward on the knuckles of their hands. They usually sleep in the trees
in nests they build of branches and leaves. Chimpanzees can hunt alone or in groups while stalking and
killing various mammals such as monkeys, duikers, bushbucks, and wild pigs. They are herbalists as they
use some plants to cure diseases for themselves

Male chimpanzees are capable of reproducing when they are 16 years old whereas females reach estrus
at the age of 10. The estrus cycle lasts for 36 days and it is during this time, the female experiences
major changes in the shape, size, and color of the genital skin. This is due to increase in the level of
estrogen hormone. The males are attracted to the additional hormonal scents that the females offer
during this time of the cycle.
Chimpanzees breed all year round whenever one of the females in the troop comes into season. Female
chimpanzees have menstrual cycles like humans and they come into oestrus every 36 days unless they
are pregnant. They have a gestation period of 8 months and they give birth about every three to four
years. Also, a female chimp gives birth to one baby and rarely twins. A female may be mated by all the
males in a troop, regardless of their social standing, who show no sign of competition between
themselves. chimpanzee breeding in uganda.
When it is the female's first baby, she often appears ignorant about what to do with it but with time a
combination of instinct, watching more experienced mothers with their babies, and learning, she soon
starts to care for it. For the first 5 months of its life the baby chimpanzee is carried everywhere by its
mother, and clings tightly to her fur. It begins to walk at about 6 months and weighs 9kg when it is one
year old. The baby is vulnerable and dependent on its mother for at least two years, sometimes still
riding on her back for periods at 4 years old. After four years, the mother will have another baby and the
elder one has to stand for itself for survival. It spends much if its time with chimpanzees of the same age
and for the next 4 or 5 years the youth chimpanzee will learns where the best feeding places are and
